Help with Low self-esteem, assertiveness, anger, communication or career issues.
Counselling for Low self-esteem, assertiveness, anger, communication or career issues.
A systems approach to working on these types of issues would involve understanding how one acts and reacts in "the system", or in relationship to others, whether it is with family, friends or in the work place. It is very common for individuals to want to avoid conflict with or being rejected by, either someone they care about or by a group. We learn that "don't rock the boat" or "don't stir things up" apply at home and at work. Thus an individual learns to give in and go along with the group or another person. This process of giving in, going along, or wanting to please can contribute to lower self-esteem, frustration and anger, and communication issues, at home or at work. It is not simply a matter of being more assertive. Our approach would encourage the individual to observe when, where and how much they "go along". Can the notice what comes up when they go along? Can they be clear on how they would like to be in those situations? Ideally a person can become better at thoughtfully discussing their point of view, without having to be right and without feeling they have to change the other person's mind. It's okay to agree to disagree. These issues are in fact relationship issues - they happen only in relation to others. Hence the value of working on these issues in the context of one's patterns of functioning in relationship to others (the system).
